I think the desktop is much better than laptop. Desktop is more efficient and funcjonal than laptop.
Laptop is smaller and portable but for that same cash we can't buy that same entrails like in desktop.
For 500€ (in Poland) we can buy PC + monitor with Procesor AMD Athlon X2 4800+ 1MB Cache 2.5GHz... or laptop CoreDuo T3200 2x2,0GHz... I would buy Destkop,. But if I travel often I would buy laptop ( which battery work for 2h
) but I can use it anywhere is option for traveler 
or salesman
